“In November 1999, I went in for my yearly check-up and had my first mammogram at age 40. The report came back with a lump indicated in my left breast. Upon further testing, it was discovered that it was breast cancer. After careful consideration, I decided to have a double mastectomy followed by chemotherapy.
After the mastectomy, I decided to have reconstruction surgery to reform both breasts. After several surgeries which involved inserting expanders, followed by placement of the implants, and followed up with the nipple tattooing. Upon completion, while there were several areas that did not look symmetrical to me, I was told this was the absolute best they could do, and because I had no point of reference, nor did I know anyone who had ever had breast cancer, and feeling that this was better than having no breasts at all, I resigned myself to the fact that I would look this way for the remainder of my life.
In 2013, I was in an automobile accident and the seatbelt caught my right breast which caused swelling. At that point, I went in to see Dr. Brantley. He informed me that there were several areas that he felt he could improve the appearance of both my breasts by replacing both implants, transplanting fatty tissue from my abdomen to fill in certain areas, restructuring my nipple placement followed by new tattooing around the nipple area.
After only a few days of recovery, it was already visible the drastic change in my appearance. Both breasts were the same size, the nipple placement was symmetrical and for the first time since my mastectomy, I felt like I had a chance to look beautiful again. I am still in the recovery process, and I am anxiously awaiting my new tattoos.
While breast cancer is a devastating diagnosis for any woman, the above is my personal testimony of the difference that has been made in my body, and my life, after Dr. Brantley’s revision of my breasts. I would encourage anyone that has ever said, “This is the best I can look”, to take it one step further and talk to your plastic surgeon. I’m sure glad I did!”
