Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Retailers and marketers capitalize on the ‘pink’ movement to bring awareness and funding to breast cancer and research. In this special month, we see pink ribbons and even our daily products replaced with their pink counterparts. But how does that change our response to cancer and those with it?

Getting the Word Out
Even the NFL has even joined in on the fun, as we see brute linebackers sporting pink gloves and refs wearing the color. The league has entitled this nationwide campaign “A Crucial Catch, Annual Screening Saves Lives” (http://www.nfl.com/pink) The figurehead of the NFL’s “Crucial Catch” is a Staten Island mom was motivated to check checked after a New York Jets game two years ago. In just a few seconds she found a quarter-sized lump- later being diagnosed as triple-negative breast cancer. What followed was a year of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments that were, as she put it, “nothing short of horrible.” Almost two years to the day she first discovered her tumor, Tina is now cancer-free. In the same vein, our very own “Tackle A Cure” program raises awareness in the local community. We could not think of a better place to capture the attention of more people than under the lights of a Friday night football game.

Available Procedures
We are still optimistic that one day, all of this attention will not only stop a woman’s developing breast cancer, but also stop cancer in its tracks before it starts in the future. Face and Body Center offers Breast Reconstruction and also performs Subcutaneous Mastectomy, which is an operation for low-grade breast cancer or benign conditions. While we can’t give you back the last years of fighting cancer, we can partner with you in taking steps towards becoming whole again.

Action
There are many facets to this ravaging disease that we acknowledge. Some of you may have already fought the fight or are in the midst of breast cancer. There are others that are sympathetic to women close to them as they begin the process. Lastly, there are numerous people that have yet to be diagnosed as a silent threat lurks beneath the surface. It is important to:

  • CATCH the cancer early
  • KNOW your options for reconstruction
  • LOVE those that are on the heroic road, fighting the fight
