The Face and Body Center wants to help illustrate the past ideas and themes which have surrounded the history of breast augmentation over the years. To begin, the silicone envelopes which are filled with either silicone gel or saline were first sold in the U.S. during the 1960s. National sales remain relatively slow until the 1980s and by the 90’s almost one million women had undergone the surgery. The FDA first approved the use of saline breast implants for the first time in 2000 while silicone implants were later approved in 2006. Two plastic surgeons – Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin - developed the first silicone breast implants during the 60’s which sparked a brand new industry that continues to thrive some 50 years later. In fact, this is the second-most popular form of cosmetic surgery across the globe. More than 1.5 million women have undergone this surgery in 2010. This cosmetic procedure is not only used by women who desire an optimally shaped body, but also by patients who have undergone mastectomy from the result of breast cancer. This was something the founders had envisioned during the inception of their product. If you have any questions or wish to consult with one of our trained doctors, please reach out to The Face and Body center at your convenience. We can answer questions about the breast augmentation procedure and even schedule a consultation over the phone.
