About Fat Transfer

Achieving the ideal proportions and reducing stubborn fat in certain areas of the body can prove to be a difficult or even impossible feat in some cases. A fat transfer procedure, or fat grafting, could be the solution. The Face & Body Center's team of board-certified surgeons can perform a fat transfer, which involves removing the stubborn fat using liposuction and injecting it into desired areas of the body to enhance and contour your physique. Popular places that our Flowood and Jackson, MS patients receive a fat transfer include the breasts, buttocks, face (cheeks and lips), hands, or other parts of the body that need extra volume and shape. The fat is usually removed from areas such as the stomach, thighs, or buttocks to present a slim figure. Our team can meet with you and tailor your fat grafting procedure to your desired goals and body type.

Mastopexy with Augmentation and Abdominal Liposuction with Fat Transfer. - I initially went to see Dr. Wegener because my right breast saline implant placed in1997 had leaked. At the consultation, we decided on a lift and new saline implants under the pectoral muscle. (My original implants were on top of pecs.) Surgery went perfectly and I am well pleased with my results. Six months later, I had abdominal liposuction with fat transfer to my butt. Again - couldn't be happier with the results, especially at my advanced age of 57! But let me tell ya something people, abdominal liposuction is an EXTREMELY PAINFUL procedure in recovery. This would be my only complaint with Dr. Wegener: not enough information was provided about the pain during recovery. I still would have gone through with the procedure but I would have been better prepared at home.

What to Expect

Once you are under general anesthesia or local sedation, an instrument called a cannula is inserted into the skin to suction out the fat. Incisions for this procedure are routinely very small and will be easily hidden under clothing. The removed fat is then sorted and purified before being put into a syringe for the transfer. Your plastic surgeon will inject the fat into the skin and perform a massage so the fat settles smoothly into the needed area. This process may have to be repeated several times, which is also known as a layered fat grafting, for the best results. You will see redness and swelling initially, but fat transfers usually have a downtime of 7 – 10 days and total recovery period of 1 – 2 weeks.

Anticipated Results

Patients receiving a fat transfer may need additional grafting surgeries in the future. As the fat settles into the new area of the body, it may become reabsorbed by the body. Fat transfer is generally an easier and more natural way to enhance and add volume to areas of the body than dermal injectables or artificial implants. Some patients may consider having dermal injections in the area(s) that need volume as a test to see what they do or do not like about the outcome.

About Us

Fill In with Fat Grafting

Weight loss, aging, and genetics are all reasons why an area of the body needs replenished volume. A fat transfer creates fuller, healthier-looking areas of the body without allergic reactions since it is your own fat. We invite you to schedule a consultation to learn more about fat transfer surgery and your options.

How much does a fat transfer cost?

Fat transfer prices will vary greatly depending on several factors. In transfers to the breasts or buttocks, a higher volume of fat is needed, so liposuction is used and a longer process is employed to purify the fat and graft it where needed. Smaller treatments, such as those to the face and hands, require less time and fat. The volume amount needed to achieve your needs and goals will be explained in your initial consultation with Dr. Barraza, along with estimates of cost and payment options for you to consider.

Where can I have fat transferred?

Fat can be transferred on most areas of your body or face where you want volume. A few of the most popular areas are the buttocks (typically known as a Brazilian butt lift), breasts, face, and hands. Fat grafting might be performed with breast reconstruction or augmentation with implants to fix flaws. Volume loss caused by aging in the hands and face may also be corrected with fat grafting, especially in the hollows under the eyes or to add shape to your lips. Tell Dr. Barraza during your consultation about where you would like to add volume so he can develop your personal fat transfer plan.

How long will the results of a fat transfer last?

A fat transfer offers beautiful, effective results that can be long-lasting with proper care. Dr. Barraza employs the latest methods to purify and graft fat that minimize reabsorption. However, there is generally a certain amount of fat that does not attach to its new area, so Dr. Barraza often transfers a little more fat. If you would like to enhance or touch-up your appearance after a while, a second fat transfer can be discussed.
