What to Expect
Male breast reduction surgery usually involves a combination of surgical tissue removal and liposuction. Your plastic surgeon will make an incision (usually around the areola) and remove dense breast tissue with precise excision. Then he can remove any excess fat with liposuction to create a smooth contour. After the surgery, your chest will be bandaged and wrapped in a compression garment that should be worn at all times. You should rest and move your upper body as little as possible for at least three days. Most patients can return to work in 7 – 10 days and resume low impact exercise in 2 – 3 weeks. Your surgeon will go over specific recovery instructions and any prescribed medication.
Anticipated Results
Results from male breast reduction are usually seen at least three months after the surgery when the swelling has subsided. It may take 6 – 12 months for the skin to tighten and form to the new chest shape. The results of male breast reduction surgery will be permanent as long as you maintain a healthy, stable weight, but natural signs of aging (like loose skin) will continue.

Gynecomastia Treatment FAQs
How much does male breast reduction cost?
The exact cost of male breast surgery can vary based on how much fat and skin need to be removed, as well as other factors. When it comes to procedures like gynecomastia surgery, it's important to work with an experienced surgeon you can trust instead of focusing on the lowest cost. We accept a variety of payment methods at The Face & Body Center and will be happy to work with you on medical financing options to help make your treatment more affordable. While surgery for gynecomastia is typically not covered by insurance, it's worth talking to your insurer to confirm.
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance in the hormones. Most often, gynecomastia is linked to the use of anabolic steroids or androgens. It may also be the result of using illegal drugs, including heroin and marijuana. Gynecomastia might also be caused by certain medical conditions (for example, hypogonadism, hyperthyroidism, and tumors) plus some medications (highly active antiretroviral therapy for AIDS, chemotherapy, and anti-anxiety medications).
How can I tell if I have gynecomastia?
In addition to having noticeable excess breast tissue, gynecomastia can also cause symptoms like tenderness, swelling, and pain. Some men may have pseudogynecomastia (false gynecomastia), so we encourage patients to try to lose weight by following an exercise plan and healthy diet before considering surgery. If you still have enlarged breasts at a healthy weight, we can perform a physical exam and tests to diagnosis gynecomastia. This may include a mammogram, blood tests, or a biopsy to rule out other conditions like breast cancer and mastitis (infection of the breast tissue).
Can gynecomastia be treated with exercise or pills?
Generally speaking, surgery is the most effective way to deal with gynecomastia. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any medications for male breast reduction. Although they are not approved for the treatment of gynecomastia, some breast cancer medications (Tamoxifen or Raloxifene) might give you minimal improvements. Upper body weight training to build the pectoral muscles cannot reduce the excess breast tissue and could even make the breasts look bigger.
Will this fix puffy or pointy nipples?
Puffy or pointy nipples may be caused by a condition called glandular gynecomastia. If you are concerned about this, be sure to tell your surgeon at The Face & Body Center during your consultation. They will customize your treatment plan to select the best incision pattern and technique to correct your nipples. Large areolae may also be reduced during surgery for gynecomastia. It is important to be open with your provider about all your concerns and wants in your initial consultation, so we can make sure you are happy with your results.
