About Eyelid Surgery
The eyes are one of the most important and prominent features of the face. However, wrinkles, excess skin, and bags can begin to form on our upper and lower eyelids as we age, making us look tired. If this is a concern that you're experiencing, then our team of trusted surgeons at The Face & Body Center would love to help restore your youthfulness and give you back years in your facial appearance. At our Flowood, MS practice, we offer eyelid surgery (medically known as a blepharoplasty) which can lift and tighten the sagging skin on the upper lids and reduce bags under the eyes. The result will be a more youthful, refreshed, and awake appearance that will last for years.
The best candidates for eyelid surgery:
- Have eyelid issues that cause them to look older
- Have vision problems caused by droopy eyelids
- Have droopy, downturned eyelids as a result of aging or genetics
- Have bags under the eyes
- Desire a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance
- Desire a natural look
Eyelid Surgery Reviews
"Did a beautiful job on my right eyebrow."- O.K. / Google / Aug 19, 2017
"Excellent Experience - He is a top notch provider and his results are impeccable. Can't say enough good things about him. I went to him for Blepharoplasty surgery and although it's only been a week, I am very happy with the results so far."- S. / RealSelf / Nov 06, 2018
"I can see! My vision is immensely improved - After a stroke, my vision was being affected by dropping eyelids. Dr. Shelby assured me this could be remedied. My concern was having an "owl" effect after raising the lids. His procedure involved raising the eyebrows as well as well as the lids. I couldn't be more satisfied. My vision is immensely improved and my eyes look normal again. Dr. Brantley is WONDERFUL, so patient and reassuring! Plus he has a fabulous support team. Thank you, Dr. Brantley!"- T. / RealSelf / Mar 02, 2020
What to Expect
Upper Eyelid Surgery: For upper eyelid surgery, your plastic surgeon will make the incision within the natural fold of the eyelid. The incision will be extended outward as much as possible in order to address the extraneous skin folds located on the outside of the upper lid. After the incision is carefully made, your surgeon will remove the excess fat and skin. Afterward, the incision will be closed with absorbable sutures that do not require removal.
Lower Eyelid Surgery: For lower eyelid surgery, the incision will be placed along the bottom of the lash line to allow your plastic surgeon access to remove the extraneous fat and tissue. A special technique is used for patients with puffy lower lids and good skin tone called transconjunctival blepharoplasty. Patients with dark undereye circles caused by a lack of fat in the area could benefit from injectables or fat fillers to add volume to the area.
Upper and Lower Combined: With some patients, both the lower and upper eyelids need to be addressed to correct all issues effectively. When both are combined, surgery can last around two hours.
Although eyelid surgery is usually an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility, it can also be performed as an in-office procedure with a milder form of general anesthesia called twilight sedation. After surgery, you can expect the eyelids to be bruised and swollen – this can be alleviated with ice packs, medicated eye ointments or eye drops, and by elevating the head. These symptoms should last a few days. Eyelid recovery is usually easy for most patients, and normal activities can be resumed within a week. You should expect natural-looking, younger, more refreshed eyelids after their surgery. In addition, scars shouldn’t be visible due to their placement.
