About Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin rejuvenation treatment recommended by our board-certified plastic surgeons at The Face & Body Center to patients looking for an effective, nonsurgical skin rejuvenating treatment. It is best used for issues such as rough skin texture, small acne scars, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, and more. The procedure works by using a tool consisting of either a wire or diamond brush that creates abrasions on the surface of the skin to exfoliate old particles, helping the skin create a new surface through the healing process. If you're looking for fresher, brighter skin, then contact our office in Flowood, MS to learn more about dermabrasion.

Best Candidates

Dermabrasion is considered a safe and effective treatment for anyone who has:

  • A desire to improve his or her appearance, skin tone, and texture.
  • Acne scars, small cysts, abnormal patches of skin, and superficial skin growths
  • Skin color irregularities, such as hyperpigmentation

Dermabrasion may not be effective for those who have severe acne or who have used certain acne drugs, such as isotretinoin, in the past 6 –12 months. Patients who have a history of developing keloids or other abnormal scarring should avoid dermabrasion.

What to Expect

Dermabrasion will produce some discomfort since it relies on wounding the top layer of the skin to produce supple results. Our medical professional will clean the area first and then apply a numbing cream, or local anesthetic may be used depending on the depth of the treatment and how large the area is. A cooling or cryogenic agent may be applied beforehand as well. The skin may bleed during the treatment and gauze will be applied as needed.

Anticipated Results

Skin regrowth usually takes 5 – 8 days. Normal skin color should return in 2 – 3 weeks for milder treatments and 6 –12 weeks for deeper treatments. Once your skin has healed, you should see a clearer and brighter overall complexion with fewer blemishes and texture/pigmentation issues. Though your skin will age normally, results can last for years.

Awesome Experince - After visiting just about every Surgeon in MS and LA, I saw Dr. Davidson, I knew right then he was my pick. In October 2016 I went in to the office and he drained my 450 each breast saline implants. No pain so simple, sent me home and said come back in 6 weeks. Mind you I still had the bags in. Thought this would be hard really never knew they were there. I had some pre-cancerous spots...

Schedule a Skin Consult Today

If you desire clearer, brighter skin that is more radiant and youthful, then schedule a skin consultation with us today. We can perform dermabrasion treatments to help you reveal the smooth skin that you've been looking for.

About Us
How much does dermabrasion cost?

Your cost for a dermabrasion session will vary based on the areas you're getting treated. Once your personalized plan is developed during your initial consultation, your aesthetician will discuss your costs. Since dermabrasion treatments have better results when received regularly, you might consider purchasing a package. The Face & Body Center of Plastic and Hand Surgery Associates also frequently offers specials on treatments, so look at our website or ask.

Should I get dermabrasion or a chemical peel?

In your consultation, your aesthetician will evaluate your complexion and ask about your concerns and wants. After this, they will explain whether a chemical peel or dermabrasion is better for you. A medium to deep chemical peel or dermabrasion treatment are both effective at treating sun damage, uneven skin tone, wrinkles, and a rough skin texture. You might find that you prefer one treatment over the other or that your skin is better after one. Tell your aesthetician about the history of your skin, including previous reactions or allergies.

Is dermabrasion painful?

Depending on the depth of your treatment, your aesthetician will suggest a numbing cream or local anesthesia to minimize discomfort throughout your appointment. Following your dermabrasion, when the anesthesia stops working, your face may tingle, sting, or feel like you've got a light sunburn. Your aesthetician will give you tips on caring for your skin, including how often to apply ointments. Swelling, redness, and discomfort should be gone soon as your skin recovers and your complexion is visibly improved.

Can I combine dermabrasion with other treatments?

Generally, we don't suggest combining dermabrasion with another resurfacing procedure (such as a chemical peel or laser skin resurfacing). However, you may consider getting a facial or injectable wrinkle treatment with dermabrasion. Tell your aesthetician about your cosmetic concerns during your initial consultation so they can develop a comprehensive plan that addresses everything.
