WHAT TO EXPECT

When You Arrive

One of our receptionists will greet you upon your arrival to The Face & Body Center. We try to send the necessary forms to you ahead of time, but if time doesn’t permit, our receptionists will provide you with the forms to complete. Be sure to bring your insurance card and drivers license.Your honesty and full disclosure when filling out your patient forms are extremely important. This information will help your surgeon determine your course of treatment and may help avoid medical complications. Be honest about your alcohol and tobacco consumption. Also, when listing your medications, you should include any herbal supplements or vitamins you’re currently taking.

Meeting Your Surgeon

Your consultation may last anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour depending upon the proposed procedures. Your physician will give you a brief introduction about his or her background and experience.

What are your goals?

After the introduction, the physician will take great effort to understand what result you are trying to achieve. Viewing before-and-after pictures of the physician’s past patients can help guide this conversation. The physician will also ensure that your expectations are in line with what you can realistically expect from the procedure.

Your Medical History

The physician will also inquire about your medical history, as well as your current physical and emotional state in order to determine if you’re an ideal candidate for the procedure.

Details of Your Procedure

With a full understanding of your goals and medical history, the physician can determine the best plan for you. He or she will explain in detail the procedure as well as the recovery experience. The physician will cover where the procedure will be performed, its estimated duration, whether or not anesthesia will be used, etc. The physician will also discuss any risks associated with the procedure (there are risks with any surgical procedure). Ask your doctor to outline and discuss what they are, how often they occur, and how they will be handled if they do occur. If the doctor does not openly discuss the risks and complications associated with the procedure or says that there are no risks, seek another opinion.

Costs

The costs of the procedure are another important topic to cover during your consultation. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly. Because it is elective, cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by insurance and payment is required in advance. Costs include the surgeon’s fee and fees for the surgical facility and anesthesia. Other possible costs are the pre-operative physical and blood work, medications, surgical garments, and private-duty nursing. While it is tempting to “bargain shop,” the training, certification, and experience of your surgeon are the most important factors in the success of your surgery. Select your surgeon with careful consideration; this is not an area for compromise. Our financial coordinators will be available to discuss our fees and payment options with you.

Ask Questions

Now isn’t the time to be shy. Ask questions and really get to know your physician. Establishing and maintaining a relationship with him or her makes the experience from procedure to recovery more comfortable.

Next Steps

If you decide to move forward with the procedure, the physician may schedule a second consultation to discuss the procedure in more detail. The physician and our staff will give you clear instructions on how to prepare for and what to bring on the day of your procedure. Should you have more questions or concerns after your consultation, please feel free to contact The Face & Body Center.
